Your body makes vitamin D3 when exposed to sunlight. A young person can make as much as 25,000 I.U. of D3 with a 20-min exposure to the sun. But we have been made afraid of the sun, and a 70-year-old will make only one fourth of D3 as a young person. The result is that nearly 70% of the population is deficient in Vitamin D3, defined in the US as less than 30 nanograms per milliliter. In Europe, anything less than 75 is considered inadequate.
